ME EITHER? or ME NEITHER? – How can I use them correctly?

Me either? Me neither?

The simple answer:

me either = not correct

☑ me neither = correct

We use ‘me neither’ to agree with a negative statement.

Examples:

A: I don’t like fish.
B: Me neither.
B: Me either. 

A: I couldn’t get that link to work.
B: Me neither.
B: Me either. 

A: I didn’t go to the party.
B: Me neither.
B: Me either. 

A: I haven’t even started on my essay yet.
B: Me neither.
B: Me either. 

But! Many native English speakers do say ‘me either‘ instead of ‘me neither‘. Yes, you will hear ‘me either’ often, but it is not correct. Do not use it in an exam. 

You can also use ‘either’ to agree with a negative statement, but you must include the negative form.  

Examples:

A: I don’t like fish.
B: I don’t like fish either.

A: I couldn’t get that link to work.
B: I couldn’t get that link to work either. 

A: I didn’t go to the party.
B: I didn’t go to the party either. 

A: I haven’t even started on my essay yet.
B: I haven’t started on my essay yet either. 

‘Either’ itself can be used in a sentence of course. 

We use ‘either’ to say: two or more choices. We often use ‘either‘ with ‘or‘, but not always.

You can either stay here or go home.
You have two choices – here / home

Do either one of you have a pen I could borrow?
I am asking two people.

Either you’re lying, or Tim is lying.
There are two choices – you / Tim

‘Neither’ itself can be used in a sentence

We use ‘neither’ to say: not two or more choices. We often use ‘neither‘ with ‘nor‘, but not always.

Neither one of us knew the answer.
(Two people didn’t know the answer.)

I neither agreed nor disagreed.
(I didn’t agree or disagree.) 

Excuse me, but neither of those accusations are true.
(Two accusation are not true.)

We neither booked tickets nor planned a trip, we just spontaneously decided to fly to Greece.
(We didn’t book tickets or plan a trip.)
