IT IS WHAT IT IS – essential everyday phrase

Hi everyone! Welcome to today’s essential everyday phrase where we focus on: It is what it is. In this mini lesson I break down the phrase and give example sentences that you can use to practice this phrase. Let’s get started!

It is what it is = you cannot change this situation

We use this phrase when we accept a situation because we cannot change it. 

Examples: 

A: I can’t believe Mary and Dean are getting a divorce! I thought they were very happy together.
B: Well, it is what it is. I think they were unhappy for a very long time.

 

A: I can’t believe EasyJet is so expensive now!
B: It is what it is, but they are still the cheapest airline around.

 

Unfortunately, I didn’t get accepted into Bristol University. I’m not happy about this, but it is what it is I guess.

A: Do you really need to pay 20% tax? It seems like a lot!
B: Unfortunately yes. It is what it is

 

A: Do you miss Danielle? 
B: Of course. 
A: Why don’t you call her? She might miss you too.
B: No, I think she already has a new boyfriend.
A: What? Really?
B: Yeah. It is what it is
