English Grammar | they’re? their? there? – plus TEST with answers!

How can I remember the difference between they’re, their and there?

Firstly, they are all pronounced the SAME! This makes things a little easier.

Let’s look at the difference, and easy ways to remember them.

They are = they’re

To make ‘they’re‘, you need to remove the ‘a’ and add an apostrophe.

Problem: How can I remember this?
Solution:
Think of the apostrophe as a mini ‘a’.

they're their there

EXAMPLES:

They’re such a nice couple. I really do love Bob and Jill.

I think they’re from Sweden. What do you think?

They’re studying really hard for their exams now.

I really don’t know why they’re always late.

Their = plural possessive adjective

So what’s an ‘heir’?

An heir is a person who will inherit money, property or anything else when someone dies.
An ‘heir’ will possess something, just like a possessive adjective. Easy as pie, right?

(plural possessive: Joshua’s and Megan’s son.)

There = a location which is far from you

Problem: How can I remember this?
Solution: The word ‘here’ is in ‘there’. Both of the words refer to a location.

they're their there

EXAMPLES:

I’ll be there at 8.
(that location: your school)

I think you can buy a bike lock there.
(that location: the market)

Are you meeting Iris there?
(that location: the train station)
